Im the first chair alto in my schools jazz combo, therefore, im also the soloist, and soloing as in making it up as you go. Yes, i get a scale to work from but im still pretty nervous. Any advice?Advice On How To Free Style Solo?
Rhythm is the best place to start. The scale comes second. You can build a scale off of two notes if you really wanted to. If you come up with a rhythm that's good, people will know you're in the ';groove'; of the music. You can also ';quote'; the song, play pieces of the head. That will often lead you to a better solo and new ideas, plus people think it's creative. You can also quote other songs. Find parts of songs that you like and remember what key they're in. Chromatic scales always work with anything, just make sure you don't play it too much. I've been playing for 14 years, and it mostly takes relaxation. If you make a mistake, it could turn into something great that nobody has ever played before. So just relax and play.Advice On How To Free Style Solo?
lots of arpeggios and melodic minor scales and moving in fourths a lot gives it a nice jazzy feel.

Have fun
