Advice on the best free or relatively cheap family tree software?

I'm at the stage where I'd like to get my tree somewhere permanent. It's on Genes Reunited but their programme is a bit of a pain. I've tried downloading Personal Ancestral File from the Church of Latter Day Saints but I don't like how their printouts abbreviate things nonsensically and how I can't see an overall picture of my tree.

Is there any other good software which is ideally free, or at least reasonably cheap? I'm not professional enough to bother with family tree maker, I just want to have this for posterity.Advice on the best free or relatively cheap family tree software?
i have the Who Do You Think You Are? family tree maker by GSP. It was only 拢4.99. they have them second hand for that on Amazon but beware they come with a free trial which may not be available if the disk is used. It is compatible with the Genes site, you just upload your whole tree. it doesn't matter if its not the up to date version either. Good luck. you ll be hooked. PS the genes site is only 拢10 a year fantastic value considering what Ive got back from it.Advice on the best free or relatively cheap family tree software?
Hey reniannen,

I like FTM, my friends prefer Rootsmagic because of sorts, and searches. They are about $30 each, and if you had either that would serve you well. Actually FTM is for beginners too. It is easy to use. You plug in information, and poof, your tree shows in a diagram. There are advanced features, but you can just start with the basics, Name, dates, places and it makes the links as parents and children - as you tell it.

Here are some sites to check, and some sites to help you compare. Also, the charts are great when interviewing family members for more information.

suggested going on e-bay

for an older version of someone's newer program.

Since some people ';must'; have the latest,

and the ';just past'; is what most of us are using anyway...

seems like a fine idea.

Too bad it wasn't my idea...
probably find out and then create it yourself on paper or computer software like word because it tends to be quite expensive and genes reunited is ok but when you want to do something you get a page saying you have to sign up for this that or the other or get hit with charges for doing something. lol
