How can I find a free lawyer, or free legal advice?

Some (and most) lawyers can give you a free initial consult. Legal aid is good, but not always the best. How can I find a free lawyer, or free legal advice?
if you are in a union, you have most likely already paid for a lawyer through your dues and are entitled to representation. If not, you can check your local legal aide, who will probably be of very little assistance, or see if a local law school runs a clinic wherein law students will help you. Legal aid, but there are income limits to be eligible to use them, and they only take certain kinds of cases.
Look in the phone book. In Illinois we have Prairie Legal... they help people based on income. Look for something like that.
Call the courthouse where you live, they can put your in contact with a legal aid service.
